Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)

Fire Engineering (dot com) have recently wrote a small article about CERT training this winter, giving information and contact details for taking part in the Community Emergency Response Teams (click here).

Fire Engineering points out that…

CERT is an initiative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency that has spread to communities throughout the country and hundreds of Tempe residents are already involved in the program. CERT volunteers are trained by Tempe Fire Department personnel in areas like disaster preparedness, fire safety, treating injuries, and search and rescue, in hopes that they will be able to put these skills to use in the event of large scale and daily emergencies.

CERT is a great initiative bringing people together to get everyone involved in emergency response, allowing communities of people to take steps towards being self sufficient in the event of emergencies. It may only be an ideology right now that communities can go without fire services during times that they need them the most, but if community response teams can be formed to at least take some weight off the fire services (who already often perform heroic acts, but are underfunded) during high pressure times, then these initiatives can only be a good thing.

The official website provides several pieces of training materials and answers many Frequently Asked Questions.

You can register a CERT program here – http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/registry.shtm.

You can also find existing nearby CERT programs on the same website. Do you currently participate in a CERT program?

What was your experiences with them? Are there are disadvantages with CERT programs?
